Redcliff RCMP investigating break and enter at Pharmasave

REDCLIFF, AB — Redcliff RCMP are investigating after a brazen robbery by an unknown number at a business Wednesday morning.

An alarm at the Redcliff Pharmasave went off at approximately 4:45 a.m., and store owner and pharmacy manager Rob Hozack received a call from the alarm company, after they phoned the police.

“We’ve been called before, usually it’s one motion sensor, we’ve never had somebody in the store before,” he said.

Hozack and RCMP arrived at the store, but the suspect(s) in the store were gone by the time they arrived.

Hozack and police believe the suspect(s) picked the lock of the front door which set off the alarm, and made off with the store’s ATM, which had approximately $4,500 inside.

But the suspects didn’t stop there.

“They tore apart the cabinets in the pharmacy, trying to get the drug safe, but it was too heavy, it’s a substantial safe,” he said. “They gave up on it.”

Hozack says the safe had very few drugs inside of it at the time, noting the pharmacy only orders drugs when they need it, and don’t keep significant drugs on hand.

“We order narcotics as people need them, and (there are) maybe a little bit of leftovers here and there in the safe, nothing worth taking,” he said.

Hozack said the pharmacy had one break-in a decade ago, and says Redcliff has been a great place to do business, and says the store loses very little to shoplifting.

He adds as a store owner, there is worry about the robbery, but knows it could have been worse.

“Better to be broken in, we wouldn’t want a robbery while (business ) is going on and put the staff in danger,” he said. “That’s why we don’t keep narcotics on hand.

“It puts you ill at ease, you prefer it didn’t happen, but better in the middle of the night than during the day.”

Redcliff RCMP are still investigating the break and enter, and looking for anybody who may have observed anything at the location when the break and enter occurred.

Anyone with information on the break-in is asked to call RCMP at 403-548-2288.
