Hurricanes, Broncos make blockbuster trade

LETHBRIDGE, AB — The Lethbridge Hurricanes and Swift Current Broncos announced a major trade Tuesday morning with the deadline for the WHL Trade Deadline looming.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes will receive forwards Logan Barlage and Owen Blocker, defenceman Matthew Stanley and goaltender Logan Flodell, in addition to a first-round draft pick in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft, a third-round pick in 2020 and a conditional second-round draft pick in 2021.

In exchange, the Broncos received Hurricanes captain Giorgio Estephan, goaltender Stuart Skinner and assistant captain Tanner Nagel.

Barlage, 16, was drafted by the Broncos in 2016, and scores one goal and notched six assists in 37 games this season. The 6’4”, 201-pound forward collected 76 points (37g-39a) in 44 games last season for the Prince Albert Mintos in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League.

Blocker, 17, was drafted by the Broncos in 2015, and had one goal and 20 penalty minutes in 27 games this season. He had 32 points (13g-19a) along with 88 penalty minutes in 42 games with the Eastman Selects Midget AAA team in 2015-2016.

Stanley, drafted in 2013, has notched 40 assists and 40 penalty minutes in 40 games with the Broncos.

In 35 games this season with the Broncos, Flodell has posted a 24-8-3-0 record with a 3.07 goals against average and a .913 save percentage along with three shutouts.

Estephan has played in 297 games with the Hurricanes, and earned 297 career points with the team through his career (119 goals, 178 assists). In 23 playoff games, he scored 13 goals and 15 assists for 28 points.

Skinner played in 182 games with the Hurricanes, posting an 88-66-8-5 record with a 3.30 goals against average and a .907 save percentage. He also posted a 3.18 GAA and a .911 SV% in 24 career post-season games with the Hurricanes.

Nagel has appeared in 107 games with the Hurricanes, and notched 13 goals and 11 assists during his time with the team. He also scored two goals and two assists during 20 playoff games for the Hurricanes last season.

The Broncos, who were most recently ranked fourth in the CHL, return to action on Friday, travelling to Prince Albert to battle the Raiders.

The Hurricanes host the Red Deer Rebels tonight at 7 p.m.
