COCHRANE, AB – Nothing working for the Medicine Hat Travelodge Cubs on Saturday night, starting the new year with a shutout loss at the hands of the Cochrane Generals.

The Generals piled on five goals in the third period alone to skate to an 8-0 shutout win over the Cubs.

Talus Hume kicked off the scoring for the Generals just under five minutes into the first period, putting one past Cubs goalie Josh Breznik.

It stayed a 1-0 game until the midway mark of the second, when Slater Ransom picked up a rebound and doubled Cochrane’s lead to a pair of goals.

Cochrane’s Brandon Aab added another marker near the end of the period to give the Generals a 3-0 lead over the Cubs at the break.

The game was blown wide open early in the third period, as the Generals picked up goals from Austin Keller and Harry Osler to take a 5-0 lead.

Midway through the period, Ransom and Jarod Domingo scored twice within the span of 10 seconds, before Osler scored his second of the game with 1:44 remaining to send Medicine Hat to the showers with an 8-0 loss.

Cochrane netminder Knute Loe earned his first shutout of the season with 23 saves, while Breznik played all 60 minutes and allowed eight goals on 45 shots against.

It’s the first shutout loss for the Cubs since November 18 when they were blanked by a 4-0 score against the Stettler Lightning, and it’s their 17th straight loss at the hands of the Generals.

Medicine Hat now holds a 10-15-1 record on the year and remain three points behind the Strathmore Wheatland Kings for fifth place in their division.

Most of the Cubs are off on Sunday, however forwards Noah Irvine and Quinten Karg, along with defenceman Joshua Schafer will dress for Team South in the 2018 HJHL All-Star Game in Okotoks.

The Cubs return to the Kinplex next weekend for a pair of games against Coaldale on Friday night and Okotoks on Saturday.
