BUFFALO, NY – It was a long road to the World Junior Hockey Championships for former Brooks Bandits defenceman Cale Makar, but now he can call himself a gold medalist.

Makar and Team Canada were victorious over Sweden on Friday night in the gold medal game of the 2018 World Juniors, picking up a 3-1 win thanks to a late Tyler Steenbergen.

The Calgary product became a household name across the country after starting the tournament as Canada’s seventh defenceman.

In seven games with the Canadians, Makar scored three goals and added five assists to finish tied for the scoring lead amongst blueliners.

Adding to his trophy case with a gold medal, Makar was named to the tournament all-media team and was one of Canada’s top-three players as selected by the coaching staff.

Over three years, Makar played in 111 games with the Bandits and broke team and league records with 35 goals and 135 points over that span.

Selected fourth overall in the 2017 NHL Draft by the Colorado Avalanche, Makar will now head back to the University of Massachusetts-Amherst to continue his freshman season with the Minutemen.

One other local connection to Team Canada was Makar’s teammate Drake Batherson, who is the son of former Medicine Hat Tiger Norm Batherson.
