STEP applications open for employers

EDMONTON — The provincial government has once again opened up applications for employers to take part in the Summer Temporary Employment Program (STEP).

The program allows employers to hire students for summer jobs between May and August, and gives students a chance to develop and improve their skills. Eligible employers received a $7 per hour wage subsidy.

“STEP has been a valuable program for students interested in gaining unique, first-hand work experience, and it helps employers hire knowledgeable, enthusiastic summer staff,” said Christina Gray, Minister of Labour, in a statement. “As our economy is looking up, we want to continue helping students and employers alike.”

Last summer, approximately 3,000 students in Alberta found work with 1,400 employers through the program. Work took place in the fields of tourism, research, information technology, marketing and customer service.

The program resumed in 2015 after being cut in 2013. More than 5,700 students have gained jobs through STEP since the program resumed.

The program is available to small businesses, non-profit organizations, public libraries, school boards, publicly funded post-secondary institutions, municipalities, First Nations and Métis settlements. It has a budget of $10 million for the coming year.

Employers interested in applying for the program can learn about the program here.  The deadline for employers to apply is Feb. 9.
