Police to focus on intersection safety in January

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat police are placing a focus on intersection safety throughout the month of January, as part of its Strategic Traffic Enforcement Program.

According to a news release from police, intersections statistically are the most dangerous locations on the city roadways, due to the combination of vehicle, pedestrian and cyclist traffic coming from different directions.

Police say the majority of collisions at intersections are caused by driver error, with the most common errors being left turns across walking paths, disobeying a traffic control device or signal and following a vehicle too closely, resulting in a rear-view collision.

Intersection safety is a year-round focus for officers, and is a top priority in police service’s traffic safety plan.
