MEDICINE HAT, AB – One man is in Medicine Hat Police custody following a break and enter with a vehicle at an auto dealership early Monday morning.

Police say they were investigating reports of a stolen Honda Civic on New Year’s Eve, and were alerted to a vehicle that had crashed into the doors of Davis GMC Buick at around 2:45 am.

The driver of the Honda then fled and police did not release whether anything was stolen from inside the dealership.

The K-9 Unit was dispatched by police, but they were initially unable to locate a suspect.

Shortly after, police attempted to stop a stolen burgundy Ford F-350 truck that was driving erratically but called off a pursuit after concerns of safety to the public.

S/Sgt. Jason Graham said around 7:00 am, patrol officers were able to spot the truck once again.

“We tried to stop the vehicle,” said Graham. “Luck was on our side, the vehicle had some sort of a malfunction, mechanical malfunction. The driver then fled the scene and we were able to apprehend him without incident.”

Robert Handy, 27, man was arrested and has since been charged with break and enter, theft, possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000, dangerous driving, resisting arrest, possession of break and enter tools, and three counts of breach of probation.

The Red Deer man will appear in provincial court on January 3.

Graham said he doesn’t have an estimate as to the damage caused at the dealership, but said no one was hurt in the incident.

“Thankfully, there were no injuries to the accused and to any of our members,” he said. “Everything was safely done, thank God.”

Police did not say whether they are looking for more suspects in this case, but anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 403-529-8481 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
