MUCH OF CANADA STILL SHIVERING IN BITTER COLD

Another day — another battle against the bitter cold in much of the country. Environment Canada’s list of regions under an extreme cold weather warning early Friday include broad sections of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba in addition to virtually all of Ontario and southern Quebec. Overnight lows approached the minus 30 range on the Prairies and the mid-20s in central Canada.

PARENTING OF DEAD B.C. GIRLS RAISED IN COURT

Court documents show the mother of two young girls found dead in a Victoria-area home had concerns about their father’s parenting abilities. In a decision released in May, a B.C. Supreme Court judge said Andrew Berry displayed poor judgment in dealing with his children. The bodies of two children — identified by a friend and a family member as Aubrey Berry, 4, and her sister Chloe Berry, 6, were found Christmas Day.

STUDY: BARGAINS CHANGE CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR

As shoppers search for the best post-Christmas deals, a study by the University of British Columbia has found bargain hunters tend to dehumanize customer service staff. The study, published month in the Journal of Consumer Psychology, looked at bargain-hunting mentality and found it causes shoppers to be less attuned to the human needs of employees and more likely to report bad service.

LIST OF RECALLED SANDWICHES EXPANDED

Federal health officials have expanded a list of recalled sandwiches due to Listeria contamination. The initial recall on Dec. 21 listed 19 sandwiches produced by HQ Fine Foods. The list now includes 36 varieties sold across the country under several brand names with a best-before date of Feb. 1, 2018. There have been no reported illnesses linked to eating these products.

MAPLE LEAFS TO HONOUR JOHNNY BOWER

The Toronto Maple Leafs say the club will host a celebration of life honouring legend Johnny Bower at the Air Canada Centre. Members of the public will join past and present Maple Leaf players and guests from the NHL at the event on Jan. 3. The Hall of Fame goaltender died Tuesday at age 93.

CANADA-USA HOCKEY RIVALRY MOVES OUTDOORS

Canada and the United States will battle the cold and each other today when they play outdoors in the preliminary round of the world junior hockey championship in Buffalo. It’s expected to be around minus 9 Celsius when the puck drops at 3 p.m. ET. Canada 2-0 in the tournament following wins over Finland and Slovakia.
