Firefighters say regular inspection helps keep equipment safe for winter fires

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Fire Service says keeping their equipment in proper working order helps ensure they’re able to fight all fires, regardless of the temperature outside.

Michael Arnold, a firefighter with the Medicine Hat fire service, says the winter season presents a number of difficulties for firefighters, including increased trip hazards from water freezing while extinguishing fires. In addition, the cold temperatures can also have an impact on equipment.

“When we’re on scene when it’s colder out, what we definitely want to do is make sure our lines are not left closed,” he said. “If we charge a line, we’ll want to actually keep it trickling at least so it doesn’t freeze up.

“With our pumps, we want to circulate that water so it doesn’t sit, and keep it circulating and keep it warm.”

Arnold says if water does freeze in a pump, it could render the pump unusable.

Arnold says firefighters check their trucks and equipment twice a day at the start of their shifts, which includes removing standing water from hoses and the pump.

“The only water that’s sitting is in a tank that has enough water that won’t freeze in a short time,” he said.

Arnold adds the regular inspection of the equipment is important for firefighters, regardless of the season.

“It’s just as important when it’s warm, however, there’s just a few added things, such as checking your pump, making sure it is dry and that you’re ready to go for the cold weather,” he said.

The fire truck also may not look as clean as they do in other months. Arnold explains firefighters cannot wash the vehicle when the temperature dips to minus 10 degrees Celsius or lower, as the roll-up doors on the side of the truck can freeze, preventing firefighters from accessing their equipment.
