Sports Year in Review – May 2017

MEDICINE HAT, AB – While the Tigers were not on the ice this month, they still made an impact in sports stories this month, including a pair of trades and stocking the shelves during the annual WHL Bantam draft. The Bandits also continued their hot run, Sage Watson continued to dominate the NCAA ranks on the race track and Dr. Ken Sauer was recognized for his work to build sports locally.

Here are some of the stories which caught the attention of readers in May.

May 4 –WHL Bantam Draft 

The Tigers made a splash during the WHL Bantam Draft, picking Calgary goaltender Garin Bjorklund in the first round, and selecting 12 more players through the draft.

May 7 – Bandits win Western Canada Cup 

The Bandits continued their hot run in 2017, downing the Chilliwack Chiefs 6-1  in the Western Canada Cup.

May 7 – McGough drafted by Tiger-Cats 

The former CHHS Viking, who played defensive lineman with the University of Calgary Dinos for four years, was selected fourth overall in the CFL Draft.

May 15 – Sage Watson wins at Pac-12 

Watson, who is originally from Seven Persons and competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil, finished in first place for University of Arizona  in women’s 400 hurdles for at the Pacific 12 Conference Track and Field Championships in Oregon

May 19 – Makar named CJHL Player of the Year 

Makar becomes the first Brooks Bandits player to win the CJHL’s prestigious award.

May 20 – Dressage comes to Dunmore 

The Dunmore Equestrian Centre hosted its first ever dressage event in Medicine Hat in May, attracting 12 competitors

May 22 – Bandits win second place at RBC Cup 

The Bandits were defeated 3-2 in overtime by the host Cobourg Cougars at the RBC Cup.

May 23 and 26 –Tigers trade Schneider, Bradley

Forward Matt Bradley was traded to the Regina Pats in exchange for goaltender Jordan Hollett, while goaltender Nick Schneider was dealt to the Calgary Hitmen on May 26. 

May 28 – Cricket growing in southern Alberta 

A friendly match between teams from Medicine Hat and Lethbridge took place in the Gas City, with other tournaments taking place this summer. The sport’s popularity in the city can be linked to international students at Medicine Hat College introducing the game to locals.

May 31 – Dr. Ken Sauer honoured 

Dr. Ken Sauer was inducted into the Medicine Hat Sports Wall of Fame  for “his volunteerism, dedication and leadership as a community builder in sports and recreation.” Sauer has been involved in sports at the local level for many years, including vice-chair and director of administration for the Alberta Winter and Summer Games when Medicine Hat was host.
