MEDICINE HAT, AB — The man charged in connection with an extortion investigation made a brief court appearance Thursday morning.

Robert Hoefman, 55, appeared briefly in provincial court via CCTV. He is facing one charge of extortion.

The defence revealing they had received a disclosure of a forensic assessment completed on Hoefman, but asked for an adjournment to review the disclosure.

The judge adjourned the case to January 10, and noted Hoefman would be required to appear in person at court.

Hoefman was arrested on Nov. 8 and charged in connection with an extortion investigation police initiated on October 10.

Police have previously said there is a possible connection between the extortion investigation and the homicide of James Satre. The 63-year-old was found dead on October 11 at the corner of Mill Street SE and Smelter Avenue.

It still has not been definitively confirmed if the two files are connected, and both cases remain under investigation by the Major Crimes Unit.
