Sports Year in Review – March 2017

MEDICINE HAT, AB — March was a busy month in sports, with provincial championships, national championships, and Tigers playoffs getting underway.

Here are some of the stories which caught the attention of readers in March.

March 4 – ACAC Basketball Provincials hosted at college. 

Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams bowed out in the semifinals, though the men’s Rattlers went home with a bronze medal. 

March 6 – Hometown Hockey hits Medicine Hat. 

Rogers brought its popular hometown Hockey program to Medicine Hat, which included a live broadcast of a Vancouver Canucks game hosted by Ron MacLean and Tara Sloan, and appearances from former Tigers and NHL stars Lanny McDonald and Rob Niedermayer. 

March 6 –Rattlers win gold at Futsal championship 

Both the men’s and women’s Rattlers futsal teams came home with gold medals at the ACAC Provincial Championship at Ambrose College

March 11 – Rattlers men’s volleyball team win bronze medal at national championship 

The Rattlers defeated the Fanshaw College Falcons in five sets to come home with a bronze medal at the CCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship

March 12 – Hat High basketball teams win bronze medal at zones. 

The Kwahommies defeated the Cardston Cougars by a score of 86-48 while the Mohawks also topped the Cougars 100-90

March 14 – Tigers clinch Central Division title

After clinching a playoff spot in February, the Tigers won the Central division banner for the first time in a decade.

March 14 – Merger talks announced for SEAC and Lethbridge Minor Hockey

Hockey Alberta began discussions of a merger between the AAA hockey programs in Medicine Hat and Lethbridge. Which would cause both organizations to cut half of their players and staff

March 18 – Colts win first provincial basketball championship

The Monsignor McCoy senior girls basketball team claimed their first provincial title in school history Saturday with a 46-41 win over W.R. Myers.

March 30 – Tigers sweep Brandon Wheat Kings

The Tigers swept the Brandon Wheat Kings in the first round of the WHL Playoffs.

March 30 – Lacroix qualifies for boxing nationals 

Janick LaCroix, 15, trains out of the Medicine Hat Boxing Club and qualified for the national boxing championship in Quebec following a string of victories.
