MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education has finalized a meeting time and location to discuss the potential closure of École St. Thomas d’Aquin.

A public information meeting will take place on January 8 from 6:30-8 p.m at the school (1970 19 Avenue SE). The community is invited to attend to provide their opinion and feedback.

On Dec. 12, the board voted to consider closing the school, and move its French immersion program to St. John Paul II School, which is under construction and set to be open in time for the 2018-2019 school year.

The school, which has 128 students enrolled this year, is in need of repairs and upgrades costing upwards of $2.5 million.

The board is also accepting written submissions about the proposed closure during the meeting. Those submissions can be emailed to communications@mhcbe.ab.ca, faxed to 403-529-0917 or dropped off in person to the board office at 1251 First Avenue SW

The board will also discuss the proposed closure during its regular board meeting on January 9 at the Catholic School Board office. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. Those interested in appearing as a delegation can contact board chair Dick Mastel by email at communications@mhcbe.ab.ca or by calling 403-527-2292.
