MEDICINE HAT, AB – Water quality issues at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, dangers on the river, and an alleged fight club had people coming back to CHAT News Today daily to find out the biggest issues.

Here are some of the stories that caught people’s attention in May.

May 9- Water quality issue detected at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital 

On May 9, AHS announced 60 elective surgeries were being cancelled or postponed at the hospital due to a water quality issue affecting sterilization.

 After a month, 205 surgeries were postponed due to the issue, before the issue was resolved in June. 

May 18 – Police tackle online fight club involving teens 

In May, police revealed details on an online fight club they stopped involving local teenagers.

May 18 – Aberdeen Street home closed for second time due to drug activity 

Crime resumed at the address once it returned to the owner’s possession earlier in the year, prompting police to close it for a second time, something Alberta Sheriffs say is rare

May 29 – Jessie Dyck trial moved to Medicine Hat 

Dyck, charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of Tanya Campbell-Losier in February 2016, had his trial, originally scheduled for Brooks, to Medicine Hat.

Dyck’s trial gets underway in May 2018. He has pleaded not guilty. 

May 29 – Police seize $33,000 worth of drugs following investigation 

Paul Rasmussen and Siofean Coderre were both charged with, and later pleaded guilty to multiple drug charges following a police and ALERT investigation into street level dealing

May 30 – Rescue on the South Saskatchewan River 

Firefighters rescue two women from the river after their raft overturns, several weeks after rescuing a teenage boy fell in and was nearly swept away. 

May 31 – B.C. Man goes missing on South Saskatchewan River

A B.C. man went missing after deciding to go for a swim in the South Saskatchewan River near Redcliff. Despite an exhaustive search, his body was never recovered.
