Sports Year in Review – January 2017

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The world of sports did not slow down in January.

The WHL season was in full swing, the Brooks Bandits continued to make waves and grab attention across the country, and a peak at a new high school gym resonated with our readers.

Here are a few of the stories which our readers enjoyed this month.

Jan 1. – Tigers add Michael Bullion 

The Tigers making a splash right at the beginning of the year, acquiring goaltender Michael Bullion from the Portland Winterhawks. The Anchorage, Alaska native quickly became a fan favourite with several highlight-reel saves, and eventually ended up as the team’s starting goaltender in the final stretch of the season.

Jan. 17 – Dawson Murschell heads to England to turn professional. 

Local darts player Dawson Murschell made the biggest stride in his career this year. He started out this year with a trip to England to take part in the Professional Darts Corporation’s qualifying school, which is the first step to turn professional.

Jan. 20 – Bandits host Chad Johnson Night 

The Brooks Bandits paid tribute to Calgary Flames goaltender Chad Johnson during a home game on January 20. Johnson, who spent two seasons with the Bandits and holds the franchise record for save percentage, was inducted into the team’s Wall of Fame during a ceremony at the game.

Jan. 25 – Medicine Hat High School gives glimpse of new gym. 

Although the first games wouldn’t be played until March, Medicine Hat High School did give CHAt Television a first look at the space before it opened.

Jan. 27 – Local sledge hockey team plays first games 

A sledge hockey team organized by the Medicine Hat Adaptive Sport Society, played its first exhibition games in January, hosting the Edmonton Paralympic Sports Association at the Family Leisure Centre and in Ralston.
