MEDICINE HAT, AB — March saw the release of the provincial budget, a significant drug and weapons seizure and discussion about photo radar in Medicine Hat after another Alberta municipality voted to end the controversial practice.

Here are some of the stories that caught the attention of readers in March.

March 3 – ALERT arrests nine people, seize $450,000 worth of stolen property. 

Nine people from southern Alberta were arrested and more than $450,000 worth of stolen property was recovered following an investigation into the methamphetamine market in southeastern Alberta. The investigation, which began in December, alleges the stolen property was being traded or sold for drugs.

March 3 – BB Gun spree in Redcliff results in three people being charged 

Three people, including a youth, were arrested and charged with mischief after allegedly firing a BB gun at car windows in Medicine Hat and Redcliff. At least 20 vehicles were vandalized.

March 13 – Local family speaks out about medically assisted death 

Colette Brunton, 59, was a local woman who chose medically assisted death on December 2, 2016. Brunton was diagnosed with a rare form of terminal cancer in 2014, and made the decision with the support of her family and friends.

March 14 – Drayton Valley votes to eliminate photo radar.

Residents from the town southwest of Edmonton voted this year to remove photo radar from their town. The City of Medicine Hat was asked if it would follow suit.

March 16 – Alberta budget tabled 

The province tabled its budget for 2017/2018, which forecast a deficit of $10.3 billion, alongside increased spending in healthcare and education.

A pair of Medicine Hat projects were listed in the budget, including the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital Expansion and Medicine Hat College. 

March 20 – Six arrested following drugs and weapons investigation. 

Medicine Hat police arrested six Medicine Hat residents following a search at a residence on Dominion Street S.E. Police seized a loaded shotgun, body armour and ammunition, along with $4,000 worth of methamphetamine and other drugs.
