BASSANO, AB — A one-year-old child was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries following a single vehicle rollover near Bassano on Saturday.

According to a news release on Monday, Bassano RCMP responded to the rollover, which happened on Highway 550 near Range Road 170, just east of the town. A Toyota Sequoia with nine occupants, eight of which were children under the age of 12, left the road and entered the north ditch, striking and severing a power pole before rolling and resting on the roof.

All occupants of the vehicle sustained minor injuries, except for the one-year-old child, who was airlifted by STARS Air Ambulance to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary. The remaining occupants were transported by ground ambulance to the Bassano Health Centre.

The child was later released from hospital, according to Cst. Kris Noel with the Bassano rC MP.

Preliminary investigation by RCMP reveals not all of the occupants were properly secured in seat belts. The collision remains under investigation.

According to Noel, charges are expected to be laid against the driver of the vehicle.

RCMP are reminding drivers that all occupants of a vehicle need to be properly restrained in seat belts and child safety seats while travelling in a motor vehicle.
