MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat had the chance on Sunday evening to watch a free concert, get into the holiday spirit and help out their local food bank.

The brightly lit CP Holiday Train will rolled into Medicine Hat on Sunday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. at Queen and North Railway Street, just east of the CP Station,

Medicine Hat’s own Terri Clark, country superstar Dallas Smith and Kelly Prescott performed a free concert for hundreds of spectators.

The event was fundraiser for food banks across Canada, and donations were accepted for the Medicine Hat Food Bank. Event coordinator for the Medicine Hat Food Bank, Krista Sanders said they had an overwhelming response from the community.

“What we are seeing is a lot of people in the community banding together to enjoy the sights and sounds of the CP Rail train,” she said.

Donations were being collected on sight and loaded into a truck to be taken to the food bank. Sanders said they rely on donations to keep the food bank running.

“This is our very busy time of year sadly enough,” she explained. “We’re seeing 85 to 100 families every single day and our brown bag lunch program is making 500 to 700 sandwiches 5 days a week for children in the school system.”

Last month, Sanders said they saw 65,000 lbs of food go out their front door last month.

The CP Holiday Train also held a special presentation during the free concert, gifting the Medicine Hat Food Bank with a cheque for $9000 to help feed more people in the community.

Medicine Hat is one of the final stops of the U.S. route of the train. Following Medicine Hat, the train will travel to Tilley at 7 p.m. at the southeast side of the Highway 876 crossing.

The train makes its final stop of the season in Brooks at 8:30 p.m. on First Avenue near the Civic Building.

The train has been travelling across Canada since 1999 and has raised more than $13 million and 4 million pounds of food for food banks across Canada.
