MEDICINE HAT, AB — The second man charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Jordan Pede last year is going to trial.

A scheduled three-day preliminary hearing for Leonard Beaulieu, 25, wrapped up on Thursday. The hearing determined there was enough evidence for Beaulieu to stand trial.

There is a publication ban regarding details from the hearing.

Beaulieu, along with Luke Boxell, 22, are both charged with second-degree murder in connection with Pede’s death.

Pede, 24, was found suffering from a gunshot wound in Strathcona Island Park on New Year’s Eve. He died in a Calgary hospital on January 11, 2017.

Boxell was arrested January 25, while Beaulieu was arrested in Winnipeg on February 13, after a brief Canada-wide warrant.

Boxell was released on surety earlier this year with strict conditions, which includes living under 24-hour house arrest with family in Manitoba. He is only allowed in Medicine Hat for court appearances. His preliminary hearing wrapped up after one day on December 6.

Beaulieu has been in custody since his arrest, and had his application for bail denied in September.

Both Boxell and Beaulieu will appear in the Medicine Hat Court of Queen’s Bench on January 12 for arraignment.
