LETHBRIDGE – A 28-year-old Lethbridge man who faces charges in what police are calling the largest seizure of methamphetamine in Medicine Hat’s history, has been released on bail.

The Crown consented to the release of Michael Abate on $2,500 cash. As part of his release conditions, he must live in Surrey B.C. and is bound by a curfew. He is also banned from possessing a cellphone or other mobile device and from having any contact co-accused Shonna Scriven.

That matter was then adjourned to Jan. 22.

According to authorities, on Dec. 8, a joint investigation involving ALERT (Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team), Lethbridge Police, RCMP and Medicine Hat Police initiated a planned traffic stop on Highway 3 just inside Medicine Hat city limits. In the trunk of the rental vehicle, police say they found over one kilogram of methamphetamine, 226 grams of cocaine and $125,000 in cash.

Abate was charged with drug trafficking and possession of the proceeds of crime, while Scriven was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking (x2) and possession of the proceeds of crime.

Scriven is scheduled to make her first court appearance in Medicine Hat on Thursday, Dec. 14.

Police have noted that they believe the drugs were coming to Medicine Hat from Lethbridge.
