Kinsmen Home Lotto tickets to go on sale Wednesday

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The biggest fundraiser of the year for the Medicine Hat Kinsmen Club is getting underway with a few changes.

The 35th annual Kinsmen Home Lotto will begin selling tickets Wednesday near Richardson’s Jewellery at the Medicine Hat Mall. Those who enter will have the chance to win the top prize of a home at 80 Hamptons Crescent Southeast.

“(There’s) big changes this year, with respect to not building a house,” said Adam Thompson, chair of the Home Lotto. “We purchased a house.”

Thompson says the main reason the club purchased the home rather than build it from the ground up was to avoid the delays they’ve run into in past years as a result of construction in the winter.

“The duration of the project has become anywhere between eight months,” he said. “People start buying tickets at Christmas time, and at the end of summer, they’re not even sure if it is the same lotto.

“We need to truncate that project down to something more feasible, like a four month project.”

In past years, the ticket sales would begin at Christmas with a final draw in the summer. This year, the final draw takes place on April 1.

The money raised from the Home Lotto helps the Kinsmen club run several programs, from free public skating and swimming, to helping maintain the Kinsmen Skate Plaza at Kin Coulee Park.

“These are pre-approved projects that have big price tags,” said Thompson. “There’s potential to have half a million dollar projects down the road that need to be funded by projects such as this one.”

Tickets are $100 each, or three for $250. In addition to the mall, tickets can be purchased at Sobeys, Budget Blinds, both Co-op grocery stores or by phoning 403-528-6230.

The house itself will be open for ticket sales starting on Saturday.
