MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Police Service and members with the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team have made what is believed to be the largest seizure of methamphetamine in the city this weekend.

Police made the seizure following a traffic stop on Highway 3 inside the city limits early Friday morning. Police found 1.02 kilograms of methamphetamine and 226 grams of cocaine inside the trunk of the vehicle. The 47-year-old female driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene.

Police estimate the street value of the drugs at $125,000.

ALERT alleges the drugs were being transported into Medicine Hat from Lethbridge, and arrested a 28-year-old man from that city.

The investigation began in early December, following concerns about methamphetamine trafficking in Medicine Hat.

“The information that was provided gave information on the network, what they were selling, approximate amounts and so when we started our investigation, we had an idea of what might come out at the end of it,” said S/Sgt. Cory Both. “What surprised us was how quickly the investigation unfolded.”

Shonna Scriven of Medicine Hat was charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking and one count of possession of proceeds in crime. Scriven remains in custody and appears in Medicine Hat provincial court on Thursday.

Michael Abate, of Lethbridge, is charged with one count each of drug trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime. He remains in custody and will appear in Lethbridge provincial court on Wednesday.

So far this year, Medicine Hat police have seized 3.25 kilograms of methamphetamine, more than doubling last year’s total of 1.47 kilograms.

S/Sgt. Cory Both speaks about the seizure below.
