Man who killed Amy Lewis set for statutory release this weekend

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The man convicted in the death of Amy Lewis in 2014 is set to be freed this weekend.

According to Joe McFarland and Global News Calgary, Jerrison Stopanski, 39, is eligible for statutory release on Saturday.

Ray Strom, the uncle of Amy Lewis, said the release of Stopanski only brings back sadness to their family.

“It brings back memories to the whole situation,” he stated. “The family was very deeply affected by the loss of Amy.”

Strom explained the family is respecting the courts decision on Stopanski’s release.

“We basically just are in a situation where the courts decided, you know that’s something we have to live with,” he said. “It’s a difficult thing to evaluate whether justice was served or not, but that’s something all of us within our society today has to come to grips with.”

Stopanski was charged with second degree murder in connection with the disappearance and death of Amy Lewis in June 2012.

In August 2014, Stopanski pleaded guilty to manslaughter, and received a seven year prison sentence, but with time served, will serve five years. His sentence ends in August 2019.

Stopanski has never revealed where Lewis’ body is located.

Under the conditions of the release, Stopanski has to abide by multiple conditions. He must report any intimate relationships he has with women to his parole officer, avoid sex trade workers and avoid contact with Lewis’ family.

If he violates the conditions, he would end up back in custody and facing new charges.
