Protection for pet owners from unknown veterinary fees

Dec 3, 2017 | 10:48 AM

CALGARY, AB.  – The Alberta government introduced consumer legislation last week that includes protection for pet owners.

It requires veterinarians to advertise and clearly post their fees, and also obtain customer approval before any procedures are performed.

The Minister for Service Alberta says pet ownership can be difficult, especially for those with limited incomes.

Stephanie McLean says people have an emotional attachment to their pets.

She says sometimes they have to make the decision to either put the animal down or give it up for adoption because they get hit with a bill they were unprepared for and can’t afford.

The deputy registrar for the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association is disappointed with the legislation.

Dr. Phil Buote says veterinary procedures aren’t done without authorization from owners, and vets have a right to set their own fees because they are private businesses.
