THREE HILLS, AB – A stellar performance from the Medicine Hat Travelodge Cubs on Saturday night, snapping an almost month-long losing skid in Three Hills.

Battling the winless Thrashers, the Cubs were coming off five straight losses ahead of Saturday’s test up north.

Medicine Hat took only 71 seconds to open the scoring, with Bailey Taylor netting the game’s first goal to put the Cubs ahead 1-0.

A few minutes later, Medicine Hat scoring on their first power play of the game off the tape of Noah Irvine to double their lead 5:41 into the first.

Special teams continued to roll for the Cubs in the final seconds of the first period, as Mackenzie Fritzler scored shorthanded with five seconds remaining to put Medicine Hat up comfortably 3-0.

Another shorthanded marker for Medicine Hat in the second, with Irvine potting his second of the night 6:08 into the period to boost the Cubs lead to four goals.

Three Hills was able to break Josh Breznik’s shutout attempt just under five minutes into the third, as Tanner Boutin scored his fourth of the year to cut the deficit to 4-1.

The Cubs added some insurance at the 18:14 mark however, upping their lead to 5-1 thanks to an unassisted marker from Chasen McKenna to preserve the victory.

Medicine Hat heavily outshot the Thrashers 46-33, while Breznik picked up his second win in Cubs colours with a 32-save showing.

Winning their first game since November 4, the Cubs are now 7-11-0 on the season but are still six points back of the Strathmore Wheatland Kings for fifth place in the HJHL South Division.

A quick turnaround for the Cubs on Sunday, as they return home to the Kinplex to face the Airdrie Thunder at 5:30 pm.
