MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Travelodge Cubs are hoping to find their way back into the win column this weekend.

The Cubs, who have lost their last three games, sit in the bottom of the Heritage Junior Hockey League’s Southern Division with a 6-9 record.

“We still have a young team,” said head coach J.D. Gaetan. “Everybody’s new to this league, we’re still getting our feet wet, and the South Divsion is really strong this year.”

The Cubs are the only team in the division with a losing record, however the northern Division has three teams below .500 so far this season.

Gaetan says the team is playing much better than their record.

“Every game is close,” he said. “It’s not like we’re getting blown out of games, we’re in most games. I’m not worried. Just a little bit of fine-tuning in practice, and I think we’re going to be okay.”

Gaetan says he has been focusing on special teams during practice the last couple of weeks, noting the team needs to improve both on the power play and the penalty kill.

The Cubs have a tough test Friday night, travelling to take on the Airdrie Thunder, who sit in second place in the North Division. The puck drops at 8 p.m.

Following tonight’s game, the Cubs return home to host the Cochrane Generals on Saturday. The game begins at 7:45 p.m. at the Kinplex.
