MEDICINE HAT, AB – The 45th annual Medicine Hat Hockey Hounds Tournament has come to a close, and it’s St. George’s School out of Vancouver that will be taking home the hardware.

On Sunday, the St. George’s Saints bested the Sherwood Park Kings in the championship final by a 5-2 final score to claim their first Medicine Hat tournament win in team history.

Sherwood Park held a 2-0 lead, but St. George’s was able to battle back before tying the game in the third period.

The Saints then came alive for three more goals before the end of the frame to secure the 5-2 win and the Medicine Hat title.

Saints captain and tournament MVP Trevor Wong said it was a picture-perfect end to a well fought tournament.

“We’re feeling great,” said Wong. “In the semi-finals [against] Delta, we weren’t at our top and had to come back hard. Every line, every pairing, we pulled through.”

As for the host SEAC Bantam AAA Tigers, they were relegated to a standard tournament finale match against the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers at the Kinplex.

The Rangers tied up the game at 2-2 in the second period, before the Tigers were able to get their lead back courtesy of assistant captain Caleb Wyrostok.

SEAC added another three goals in the third period to clinch the 6-2 win, with the Tigers ending their tournament with a record of 3-2.

Wyrostok said the Tigers desperately wanted to end off the tournament on the right foot.

“There were a lot of fans here supporting us throughout the whole tournament,” said Wyrostok. “So, we wanted to put on a good last showing for them and just end on what I would call a really good note, a really good game.”

Some local recognition for Wyrostok as well, as on Friday he was named the recipient of the SEAC Scholarship Award.

He said it was an honour to be recognized by both his team and the tournament organizers.

“It means a lot,” he said. “For all the people that were watching, it’s an honour and it’s just great.”

It’s back to regular season play for the Bantam AAA Tigers on Wednesday, as they welcome the Lethbridge Golden Hawks to town at 7:15 pm at the Hockey Hounds.
