MEDICINE HAT, AB – Two superb performances from the Medicine Hat College Rattlers volleyball teams on Friday night, playing at home to the Olds College Broncos.

The Rattlers women’s team was looking to get back on track after splitting their most recent series with the Red Deer College Queens.

Medicine Hat rolled through the first set thanks to 14 combined errors and service errors from the Broncos, cruising to a 25-13 win.

The second set was much more evenly played, with both sides trading chances until a late service rally by the Rattlers allowed them to open up a lead late.

The Rattlers ended up taking the second set by a 25-21 score, giving the home side a chance to sweep the Broncos in the third set.

This set was a marathon however with both Medicine Hat and Olds battling with a series of short rallies, forcing a few extra points.

Medicine Hat was able to find some consistency late, picking up a 27-25 win and taking the match by a 3-0 score.

The Rattlers were able to spread out their attack on Friday, with Brooke Christie, Amber Stigter, and Grace Porter all having solid evenings at the net.

Defensively, Porter and Shaya Suchy tied for a game-high 12 digs each.

As for the Rattlers men’s team, they were trying to keep their electric play going with the team being ranked fourth in the country by the CCAA this week.

Scoring went back and forth in the opening set against the Broncos, until Olds took a 15-10 lead thanks to some strong serving from Ituriel Mora Agullar.

Medicine Hat showed some life at the end of the set, but Olds was able to take a 1-0 lead with a 25-22 win.

Coach Mark Porter replaced many of the rookies he started in the opening set with veterans after the loss, which seemed to turn around the Rattlers fortunes.

Midway through the set Medicine Hat took a four-point lead, which was maintained throughout the set by the Rattlers en-route to a 25-16 win to tie the match at one.

Defensive play from Medicine Hat was the story of the third set, with three straight blocks from Brodie Dolter, Vitor Pereiira, and Brenan Kuffert guiding the boys in black and yellow to a 25-13 win.

With a chance at winning the match, the Rattlers fended off a pair of late game comebacks from the Broncos to win the fourth set 25-18 and take the match 3-1.

Pereiira had a game-high 15 kills for Medicine Hat, while Joao Pedro Freire and Dolter each hit double-digits in that category as well.

Rookie Chad Sieben led the way in the digs department, registering 12 for the Rattlers.

The home series against Olds College continues on Saturday afternoon for the Rattlers, with the women’s game going at 1:00 pm and the men’s at 3:00 pm.
