MHPS to launch annual public survey

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Police Service is launching its annual public survey to gather input from the public about community safety and policing in the city.

“Our goal is to better understand and respond to community concerns about crime and safety in our city”, said Police Chief Andy McGrogan in a news release. “As a Service, we will use the results to assist us in developing our strategic plan and outline our objectives for the next four years.”

Framework Partners Inc., a strategic planning and market research firm was contracted to independently gather and interpret the feedback received. To complete their research, Framework Partners Inc. will conduct a sample survey, in which residents will be randomly selected to either complete a telephone interview or be recruited to an online survey, which is expected to take approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

Topics covered in the survey will include general safety, communication initiatives, road safety, uniformed patrols and traffic section, bylaw enforcement, criminal investigations, victims services, trends and emerging issues and the Medicine Hat Police Commission.

Individual responses will be kept confidential and will not be shared with the MHPS other than in summary form.

Police will not be conducting a separate online survey, saying the 2011 and 2014 surveys demonstrated similar findings and the results of an open online survey cannot be confirmed as scientifically accurate.

The Service expects to have the results and will report the general findings to the community at the Police Commission meeting in February.
