E-ticket software for parking violations is saving the city money

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Software that the city of Medicine Hat developed to issue electronic tickets is already driving down municipal costs.

The software was created by an officer working for the Medicine Hat Police Service (MHPS). It allows parking monitors to enter data electronically and print the ticket on a portable device.

Mayor Ted Clugston says the software is not only efficient, but because the software was developed in house, they do not have to pay a user fee to a developer for each ticket issued.

“If you have to give 10% of your revenue away forever, it’s cheaper to do it in house. And there is a possiblity we could sell this,” said Clugston. He added that other police forces have inquired about incorporating the software into their operations.

Parking monitors began using the e-ticketing software this past summer. There are plans to expand its use in the future.
