ABBOTSFORD, BC — The Abbotsford Police Department has identified the officer who died in the line of duty on Monday.

Constable John Davidson was shot during a shootout with a suspect Monday morning. He was taken to hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The Abbotsford Police Department says Davidson was a police officer for 24 years, and was hired by the department in 2006. He served in the patrol, youth squad and traffic sections.

Davidson is survived by his wife and three children.

Officers were called about a possible stolen vehicle in the parking lot of a shopping complex at about 11:30 a.m. on Monday when the shootout occurred.

The caller blocked the suspect’s vehicle in while waiting for police to arrive.

The suspect, a man in his 60s from Alberta, fled in the vehicle and police officers pursued him to the intersection of Mt. Lehman Road and Fraser Highway. The man was apprehended and taken to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect has not yet been named.
