Saskatchewan NDP seeking aid in wake of wildfire losses

REGINA, SASK- The Opposition N-D-P wants the Saskatchewan government to dip into a 300-million-dollar contingency fund to help ranchers who lost livestock and other property in last month’s wildfire.

The blaze near Burstall, Tompkins and Leader burned thousands of acres of land and killed around 750 cattle, for an estimated loss of about a million dollars.

Opposition critic Carla Beck says the government should provide aid.

Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart says the province is helping, but notes most available programs generally do not cover insurable assets and most of the losses were just that.
