UPDATE: Powder confirmed to be wheat flour; office open again

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Firefighters have given the all clear after an unknown white powder discovered in a package at Canada Post turned out to be harmless.

Firefighters were called to the location of Kipling Street shortly after 9:30 a.m. after the powder was discovered in a package the size of a shoebox Monday morning.

After testing, the powder was determined to be wheat flour.

Employees were ordered to shelter in place in the building, and the building’s HVAC system was temporarily shut off as firefighters tested the powder on scene.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m., firefighters left the scene. The Canada Post office is open again for the business.
