Bandits shut out in Calgary, 3-0 by Mustangs

CALGARY, AB – Calgary Mustangs goaltender Joey May stopped all 29 shots he faced, as the Brooks Bandits (14-5-1) were shut out for the first time since the 2016 Western Canada Cup championship game, falling 3-0 at the Father David Bauer Arena on Sunday afternoon.

The Bandits outshot the Mustangs 14-5 in a well-played first period but were then outshot 32-15 for the remainder of the game, as Calgary won its second consecutive game against the Bandits, and also posted a shutout for the second time in as many days.

A block of a Bandit point shot led to the opening goal at 17:44 when Brady Barclay chased down the loose puck at neutral ice, skated in on a breakaway on Bandit starter Mitch Benson (Windsor, ON), and tucked a five-hole shot into the back of the Brooks net for what ended up as the winning goal.

In the second, the Mustangs extended their lead after going on their second power play of the game. First, Jackson Salt was awarded a penalty shot when it was ruled that the Bandits had thrown a puck from the crease; Salt’s bar-down shot doubled the Calgary lead. On the remainder of the power play, the Mustangs converted with 5 seconds left, when a Nathan Walker point shot was stopped, as was a Barclay rebound chance, but a third-chance try for Chase Miller on a backhand slipped by Benson to notch the 3-0 final score.

Benson still finished with 34 saves on 37 Mustang shots; the same total number of shots the Mustangs had the last time the two teams played.

The Bandits were 0 for 3 on their power play while the Mustangs went 1 for 5.

With the loss, the Bandits remain three points out of first place in the AJHL South, with the division-leading Okotoks Oilers still having two games in hand on Brooks.

Brooks will return to Calgary on Tuesday night, but for a game at the Max Bell Centre for the first meeting of the season between the Bandits and Calgary Canucks. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM with pre-game coverage on Real Country 105.7 starting at 6:45.
