MEDICINE HAT, AB – Strong efforts from the men’s and women’s volleyball teams at Medicine Hat College on Saturday night, with the Rattlers grabbing a pair of victories over Red Deer College.

In the men’s game, Medicine Hat was going for their third consecutive victory after sweeping Ambrose University last weekend.

Both the Rattlers and Kings traded points for the first set, but Medicine Hat’s Vitor Pereiira rattled off three straight aces at the end of the set to take a 25-18 victory.

Red Deer ran into some rotation troubles in the second set, delaying the game for around five minutes and allowing Medicine Hat to open up a four-point lead.

The Rattlers eventually took the middle set by another 25-18 count, putting Red Deer’s back against the wall in the third set.

Medicine Hat dominated early in the third, posting a score of 9-3 following a timeout by the Kings to gather their thoughts.

That lead was increased to 19-9 with some strong defensive play, with the Rattlers eventually coming out with a 25-14 set victory and a 3-0 sweep in the match.

Pereiira and Alfred Dalevik tied for a game-high eight kills a piece, while Pereiira and Kreggan Scharnatta each had seven digs.

Seeing their record improve to 6-1 on the season, the Rattlers men’s team sits in first place in the South Division.

On the women’s side, the struggling Rattlers were looking to rebound after a 3-1 loss to Ambrose University last Sunday.

Red Deer used their services to take an early lead and won four consecutive serves to close out the set, picking up a 25-19 win over Medicine Hat in the opening set.

That loss seemed to spark the Rattlers, with the second set being a lot more evenly contested as the lead changed seven times.

A big block late in the set clinched a 25-23 win for Medicine Hat, knotting the match up at one set each.

Amber Stigter and Brooke Christie took control in the third set for the Rattlers, coming up with some big kills and guiding the home side to 25-14 win and their first lead of the match.

The fourth set was complete dominance from Medicine Hat, going on a pair of 10-3 and 10-4 runs and taking the match with a 25-11 win.

Stigter had a great night on both offence and defence with 12 kills and 12 digs, though the most digs on the night went to Shaya Suchy with 24.

Winning their second game of the season, the Rattlers now sit in fifth place in the South Division standings at 2-5.

The weekend series against Red Deer College continues on Sunday for the Rattlers, with a pair of games at home once again.

First serve in the women’s match goes at 12:00 pm and it’s a 2:00 pm start for Medicine Hat’s men’s team.
