First flu death confirmed in South Zone

MEDICINE HAT, AB — There has been three laboratory confirmed deaths from influenza in Alberta so far this season.

According to numbers released by Alberta Health Services, one death has been confirmed in the South Zone, which includes Medicine Hat and Lethbridge. The other two deaths have been reported in the Calgary Zone.

Across the province, 300 cases of influenza have been confirmed by AHS from lab testing. Of those cases, 257 are confirmed as Influenza A, while 31 are Influenza B. The remaining 12 are of an unknown strain.

A total of 90 people have been hospitalized due to the flu, with eight of those in the South Zone. The Calgary Zone has been hit the hardest by the flu so far this season, with 59 people hospitalized. Of the remaining zones, 11 have been hospitalized in the Edmonton area, seven have been hospitalized in the North Zone and five in the Central Zone.
