MEDICINE HAT, AB — The man arrested in connection with a collision that caused the death of an 18-year-old Medicine Hat woman has entered guilty pleas to his charges.

Cody Michell, 25, entered his plea during his appearance at Medicine Hat Provincial Court Thursday morning. He pleaded guilty to charges of possession of stolen property, attempting to disarm a police officer, two counts of hit and run and dangerous driving causing death.

Michell was arrested on September 11, after an afternoon of mayhem in Crescent Heights. According to police, a truck and trailer was stolen from a home on Bassett Crescent Northwest on the afternoon of September 11. The truck was involved in two collisions on 12 Street Northeast.

The first collision, which occurred near Crescent Heights High School, saw a minivan end up flipped on its side. The occupants of the van sustained minor injuries.

The truck continued down 12th Street, where it collided with a Toyota Camry on Parkview Drive. The 18-year-old driver of the Camry was pronounced dead at the scene.

Michell was taken into custody following the second collision.

The charge of attempting to disarm a officer stems from an incident at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, where Michell attempted to reach for an officer’s pistol. Officers and staff were able to restrain Michell during the incident.

His sentencing is scheduled for February 15, 2018. A pre-sentencing report, a Gladue report and a psychological assessment, which includes a risk assessment, have been ordered.
