Mohawks gunning for South Zone Championship

MEDICINE HAT, AB — It’s a lengthy road to ASAA Provincials, but the Medicine Hat High School Mohawks are on the right track.

The Mohawks, who recently won their fourth straight Rangeland Football Conference championship, are gearing up for the South Zone Championship. The team battles the Catholic Central High School Cougars in Lethbridge.

“The provincial road is really tough, especially in Tier 2,” said Rattlers head coach Quinn Skelton. “First we have to get out of our league, then after that, the road always goes through Lethbridge, and the teams down in Lethbridge are always really, really tough.”

If the Mohawks are victorious Friday, Skelton believes they’ll be taking on Foothills Composite High School out of Okotoks, a team Skelton says usually represents the region in provincials. Another win will see them take on a team from Calgary, with a spot in the provincial final on the line.

Lachlan Hardiker, who plays slotback for the Mohawks, is confident his team can rise to the occasion.

“We’re just keeping positive, trying to do everything 100 per cent, making sure everything’s going good,” he said. “(We’re) executing, coming out hard at practice, lots of effort. Everything works together and it makes us win games.”

Hardiker adds there is a positive energy among members of the Mohawks, which helps during tough games.

“We’re like a brotherhood,” he said. “We all help each other out, and if things go wrong, we’re not yelling at each other, we’re supporting each other, and everything goes well.”

Skelton notes Catholic Central is always a tough team to play, and says the Mohawks needs to be on their game in order to pull out a victory.

“Athletically, they have kids who can score at any moment,” he said. “Their quarterback is very talented, and we’ve seen a couple of talented quarterbacks in the last few weeks, so hopefully that will play in our favour.

“There’s a big line down there, and our boys are going to have to stand up and play some tough ball.”

Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. at the University of Lethbridge Field.
