MEDICINE HAT, AB – An exceptional night both on and off the ice for the Medicine Hat Midget AA Hounds on Saturday evening.

Hosting the Foothills Bisons, Saturday’s game serving as the backdrop for the Hounds’ annual breast cancer awareness fundraiser.

Members of the Hounds decked out in pink jerseys, laces, and tape supporting the cause, while a 50/50, snack sale, and silent auction were held with all money raised going towards the Canadian Cancer Society.

Hounds manager CoraLee Riehl said it’s something the team looks forward to every year.

“It’s just something we like to support the community with, as everybody has been affected by it,” said Riehl. “There’s been players on our team that have been affected by it. So, it’s just something we like to do and instill some goodness in these young men.”

Organizers raised $1,867 over the course of the evening, which was similar to last year’s total of just under $2,000.

This was the third straight year the Hounds have put on their ‘Rockin’ the Rink in Pink’ fundraiser, with plans already underway for next year’s event.

Riehl said the event has grown in recognition each year, thanks in large part to the volunteers and parents of players.

“We try our best to get it out there on media but we are just a small, little group,” she said. “If it weren’t for the parents to help promote it, I think it wouldn’t go as well. But, we’re lucky to have a good group and it makes it successful.”

As for Saturday’s game, the Hounds rolled over the Bisons for the second straight contest to pick up an 8-0 victory at home.

The Hounds pack up for Lacombe next weekend, when they take on the Central Alberta Selects on Saturday at 8:15 pm.
