Jason Kenney elected UCP leader with 61.1% support by party members

CALGARY, AB. – Jason Kenney has been elected as the new leader of the United Conservative Party (UCP).

Kenney received 61.1 per cent of the vote to win the leadership race on the first ballot. Former Wildrose leader Brian Jean received 31.5 per cent of the vote, while Doug Schweitzer received 7.3 per cent.

Kenney, a former Conservative MP and cabinet minister under former prime minister Stephen Harper, represented the riding of Calgary Mindapore from 1997-2016. He was also briefly the leader of the  Progressive Conservative party in Alberta when he won the leadership race in March. The Progressive Conservatives voted to merge with the Wildrose Party in July 2017.

Approximately 94 per cent of eligilbe members voted in the leadership race. The results were announced at the BMO Centre in Stampede Park.
