CALGARY, AB – No worries of racking up points for the Medicine Hat College Rattlers on Friday evening, as their basketball teams stopped in at Ambrose University for a two-game set.

On the women’s side, the Rattlers were trying to keep their perfect record in tact against a 1-0 Lions team.

It was an offensive explosion in the first quarter for Medicine Hat scoring 29 points, with only three Rattlers failing to reach the scoreboard in the opening frame.

Starters Sheridan Popenia and Courtney Henry each had strong first quarters, leading the Rattlers with six and five points, respectively.

Holding a 29-19 lead in the second quarter, the Rattlers only allowed eight points from the Lions and took a 43-27 lead into the half.

After being held scoreless in the first, veteran Kennedy Werre came alive in the second quarter with six points and six rebounds.

Henry continued her excellent long-ball shooting in the third quarter, knocking down a pair of three-pointers to help build Medicine Hat’s lead to 64-41.

More of the same in the fourth quarter for the Rattlers, as Kendell Kuntz went 5-6 from the field including a pair of threes to secure a dominant 90-50 victory for Medicine Hat.

Both Henry and Kuntz had team-highs in points with 19, while Werre led the way at both ends of the floor with 13 rebounds.

Neither Henry or Kuntz were game-highs in points however, as Ambrose’s Caitlyn Hetrick scored 22 points on the Rattlers and contributed almost half of her team’s total offence.

Improving to 3-0 on the 2017-18 season, the Rattlers sit alone in top spot in the ACAC’s South Division.

The bar was set for the Rattlers men’s team after splitting their season-opening series with the Lethbridge College Kodiaks the previous weekend.

All five of Medicine Hat’s starters hit at least a pair of shots in the opening quarter, with Aaron Cameron’s eight points leading to a 32-23 advantage after 10 minutes.

Cameron exploded for an additional 13 points in the second quarter, going 5-6 from the field and boosting the Rattlers lead to 59-47 after two quarters.

Starter Stephen Jones only played seven minutes in the third, but made those minutes count with eight points and a pair of rebounds to put the Rattlers up 89-75.

The Lions charged hard in the fourth by outscoring Medicine Hat 23-19, but the Rattlers lead held to pick up a 108-98 win on the road.

Medicine Hat had no issues draining shots on Friday night, sinking almost 61% of the shots they took against the Lions.

Cameron had a season-high 34 points for the Rattlers, while Osato Obaseki managed to post a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Both the men’s and women’s teams are back at Medicine Hat College on Saturday night, hosting the Lions for the back-half of the home-and-home series.

The women’s game tips off at 6:00 pm, before the men’s team takes to the court at 8:00 pm.
