Voting underway to elect UCP leader

EDMONTON — Voting is now underway to elect the first-ever leader of the United Conservative Party, however two of the campaigns are asking for a pause in voting.

The leadership campaigns for Brian Jean and Doug Schweitzer have formally submitted a request to suspend the voting over PIN concerns.

The approximately 62,000 eligible voters in the party received a PIN, which they enter online or on their phone to vote.

The campaigns are concerned members can be assigned a new PIN over the phone by simply providing their name and address.

The party says it is confident with the security procedures in place, including tracking IP addresses of where the votes are cast. It says approximately 65 per cent of members have voted.

The party has issued roughly 1,500 new numbers and they have not heard any concerns from members.

Jean, Schweitzer and Jason Kenney are all vying for the leadership of the new party.

Voting continues until 5 p.m. Saturday. The winner will be announced at an event in Calgary on Saturday.
