MHPS looking at possible link into homicide, extortion investigation

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Police Service will provide an update into the homicide of James Satre Wednesday afternoon, and say they’re working to determine if the homicide is connected to a separate serious investigation.

Satre was found dead on October 11 at the corner of Mill Street SE and Smelter Avenue in the South Flats. Police announced two days later they were treating the 64-year-old’s death as a homicide, saying he was killed in a “cowardly” attack.

The day before Satre’s death, police began investigating an extortion attempt of a Medicine Hat resident, and investigators have not yet ruled out that the homicide victim was selected by offenders in an attempt to further the extortion attempt.

Police say Satre was not the subject of any investigation prior to his death and didn’t lead a high-risk lifestyle.

Late Monday, police received information which potentially linked the two investigations and raised concern there is threat to cause the death of unknown citizens.

Police say all available resources are being applied to both investigations, and the MHPS has also reached out to other police resources for assistance.

Anyone with information related to either investigation is asked to contact the MHPS Major Crimes Section at 403-581-1050 or provide at tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The police service is reminding all citizens to be vigilant in reporting any suspicious activity to the police immediately by calling 911. They remind residents of the importance of practising basic personal security including being aware of your surroundings, being cautious when in secluded places or when walking alone and applying general home security principles.
