MEDICINE HAT, ALTA-A rogue cigarette is suspected as the cause of a small grass fire in Medicine Hat this morning.

According to Platoon Chief Joe Greenan with the Medicine Hat Fire Department, the call came in shortly before 8:00 a.m. about flames in the brush near the Medalta museum and IXL Industries LTD. Greenan said the blaze was just off the walking path that winds through the area.

Firefighters attended the scene, quickly bringing it under control. While Greenan acknowledged the burnt area was “just a patch of grass”, he also said it “could have gotten ugly” due to the high winds.

An improperly disposed cigarette is suspected, due to the lack of other ignition sources in the area.
