Never short of an opinion, former NHL agitator Avery ready for the right TV job

The former NHL bad boy says he could see himself dishing out opinions on today’s hockey on TV.

Avery says while he’s not interested in analysing X’s and O’s, he has plenty to say about the game. And he’s not the only one, in case a successor for Don Cherry is needed.

“You’ve got a guy like myself or a guy like (former Pittsburgh and Arizona winger) Paul Bissonette, who just stopped playing, who’s an unbelievable personality away from the rink,” Avery said in an interview.

“In that kind of environment, I would love to go back into it and talk about the players and talk about all the nuances of the game that made Grapes a household name, for sure.”

Avery, now 37, retired in 2012 after 10 seasons with Detroit, Los Angeles, Dallas and the New York Rangers.

Firmly focused on a second career in acting, Avery is not campaigning for a TV job. But he acknowledges the right opportunity might interest him.
