Rattlers volleyball teams can’t buy a set against Trojans

CALGARY, AB – The Medicine Hat College Rattlers volleyball teams lost their bite on Saturday evening, swept in both of their matchups against the SAIT Trojans.

Facing the Trojans in the opener of the home-and-home series on Friday, the Rattlers men’s team improved to 3-0 on the year, while the women’s squad fell to 0-3 at home.

In the opening set of the women’s game, SAIT took an early stranglehold and rolled to a dominant 25-15 victory.

Medicine Hat closed the gap in the second set but still lost 25-21, before dropping the third set 25-22 and giving SAIT their third victory of the season.

Offensively, Amber Stigter was tops in kills for the Rattlers with 10, while Shaya Suchy had a game-high 19 digs on the evening.

Moving to 0-4 on the year, the Rattlers are still winless and are tied with the Olds College Broncos for last place in the South Division.

As for the men’s team, they battled with the Trojans in the opening set by ended up losing by a score of 25-21.

From there offence was rare for Medicine Hat, combining for only 27 points over their next two sets and falling by a 3-0 final (25-21, 25-13, 25-14) to SAIT.

The Rattlers only posted 21 kills over the three sets, with Joao Pedro Freire (seven) and Alfred Dalevik (six) contributing the most.

On the defensive side, Kreggan Scharnatta had a team-high nine digs, trailing only SAIT’s Trent Mounter in that category.

Losing their first game of the season and dropping to a 3-1 record, the Rattlers are tied with the Trojans for second place in their division.

The Rattlers are back home next weekend, as they play host to Calgary’s Ambrose University on Friday night.
