AHS urging Albertans to immunize

MEDICINE HAT, ALTA- Flu shot season is here.

Starting next week, Alberta Health Services (AHS) will be offering immunizations against influenza, as part of the annual program aimed at fighting the bug.

Immunization will be free of charge to all Albertans six months and older. They’ll be available at public clinics held by AHS, as well as pharmacies and doctor’s offices across the province.

“We have seen cases and outbreaks of influenza already,” says Dr. Lena Derie-Gillespie, South Zone Medical Officer of Health, in a news release.

“You may be healthy now but, without immunization, everyone is at risk. Prevention is your only protection.”

The health agency also sought to remind residents that past immunizations can’t be relied on, as strains of the flu change each season.

“Last season, influenza immunization cut Albertans’ risk for influenza by just more than
40 per cent,” said Derie-Gillespie, in the release.

“That’s great, but last year’s immunization won’t protect you this season. You need this season’s immunization to be protected this season.”

The release also states that 1,600 Albertans were sent to hospital last year with the flu, with 64 passing away.

“Influenza does not discriminate,” said Derie-Gillespie.

“Though some Albertans are at greater risk of severe complications, no one is naturally immune to influenza. Please don’t take the risk. Influenza can be one less thing we battle this winter. For yourself, and your loved ones, get immunized.”

Clinic schedules can be found at www.ahs.ca/influenza or by calling Health Link at 811.
