MEDICINE HAT, AB — The City of Medicine Hat has activated its Emergency Operations Centre to manage the damage caused by the high winds Tuesday night.

The operations centre is aware of power outages throughout the city and Redcliff, multiple downed power lines and fires which may have been sparked by downed power lines. Fires were reported in Brier Park and Parkview Drive.

Residents are reminded to stay 10 metres away from downed power lines and give emergency crews space to work. Crews are working to understand the extent of the storm impact, and respond accordingly.

If a line is down, contact the city’s emergency line at 403.529.8260. The city and emergency services are experiencing a high volume of traffic from callers, but the 911 system is functioning properly. Incoming calls may be re-routed to supporting agencies to field the intake of complaints, which are then routed back to the local dispatch centre.
