Paralympian and politician Michelle Stilwell can’t find gold medal in her office

VICTORIA — Former paralympian and politician Michelle Stilwell says one of her gold medals has gone missing from an office at British Columbia’s legislature.

The former cabinet minister says when she moved offices following last May’s provincial election a box containing one of her world championship gold medals disappeared.

Stilwell says in a statement she kept the medal in her office from her time as a wheelchair athlete to show visitors because she was proud of the achievement and wanted to share her accomplishments with others.

Stilwell won six Paralympic gold medals in both basketball and track, in addition to being a nine time world champion.

She is asking anybody with information that might help find the medal to come forward.

Stilwell says the medal is priceless to her and represents the hard work and sacrifices she endured to earn the victory.

“So far no one has reported the missing box or the medal and it’s unsettling given the fact that this is a secure building. I would like to put any concerns in my mind to rest that the box with my medal in it is somewhere in this building and someone knows about it,” she said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

“It is a priceless and irreplaceable item and I worked very hard to earn it.”

Stilwell, who represents the Vancouver Island constituency of Parksville-Qualicum for the Liberals, announced her retirement from international competition last February.
