MEDICINE HAT, AB — A 26-year-old Medicine Hat man has been arrested after allegedly trying to steal a vehicle while brandishing a firearm.

On Tuesday, police responded to a call of a robbery with a firearm. According to the male victim, while he stopped in front of a residence on Second Street Northeast, he was approached by a man who asked for a ride. When the driver refused, the man allegedly brandished what appeared to be a pistol, and demanded the driver get out of the vehicle.

The motorist then drove away quickly and no injuries resulted from the confrontation.

The suspect was quickly located by patrol officers, who arrested him safely and without incident. Police located a pellet gun that resembled a handgun on the suspect.

“If you have a look at that pistol, it looks very much like any other actual firearm,” said Inspector Joe West. “So our officers, especially under almost any lighting conditions, really, are never going to be able to tell if that’s a real gun or not. In this case, that gun wasn’t brandished towards any of the police officers. They were able to negotiate with the individual and it ended well without any injuries to anybody, our officers or the suspect.”

The man, who has not yet been named, is awaiting a bail hearing on charges of robbery with a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public and possession of stolen property.
